Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibition in Montreal - June 17th to October 2nd

I just got word the other day that the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is hosting an exhibit dedicated to Jean Paul Gaultier titled The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.
This exhibit is more of an installation than a retrospective. It looks at the career of the french designer and his impact he had on the world (both within the industry and society).  Also, this exhibit features 140 ensembles as well as various documents. Furthermore, it features more technological innovation in displaying his work, such has animated mannequins (http://www.mmfa.qc.ca/en/expositions/exposition_153.html)

This exhibit definitely looks amazing. I love JPG and I will be making plans to go see this exhibition in the very near future. Stay tuned for pictures :)

Feathers...I can't get enough!

The feather thing has been around for quite a while now, but I'm surprised I'm not sick of it yet.
I've noticed alot more girls wear feathers in different ways and I guess it is a more feminine thing to do. However, I'm starting to see alot more guys wearing feathers and even designers are catering to using feathers in menswear too. For example, Swedish designer Carin Wester used feathers for most of the menswear designs in her S/S 2011 collection. I particularly loved how she used different types of feathers for the necklaces. I was also impressed with how masculine they looked and I loved the incorporation of different beads to make the look more natural and tribal/native looking.

This trend really has an influence on my own fashion sense. Most of my accessories have a feather theme to them. And I find most of these items easily pair up to my overall look. Recently, I have an urge to feather my hats. I just need to find the right feathers (I'm thinking a long-pheasant like feather).

Anyway, I'm on a mission to look for other designers who use feathers in menswear, so if anyone knows of any give me a heads up!! thx

My Designer Coordinator Experience

In cleaning my laptop, I stumbled upon a folder containing pictures of my experience with Ottawa Fashion Week. And in reviewing these pics, I was surprised to also realize I haven't blogged about my experience  (considering my blog is focused on fashion and style).

In saying that, I think it’s best to start with what Ottawa Fashion Week is and why I interned as a Designer Coordinator. OFW is non-for-profit event that aims to highlight the talents that both fashion designers and artist embody. In the same vein, this event strives to emphasize the sophistication and creativity that designers and artists bring, as well as show to the world that Ottawa IS a fashion hub.

The reason why I decided to intern with OFW was because I love fashion and I truly do believe that Ottawa does have a strong sense of fashion and style. And my experience as a designer coordinator has solidified my belief. In working one on one with designers, I learned (to some degree) how much work it is to become a serious designer, and how much work it takes to produced a successful fashion show. More importantly, I learned that Ottawa has a strong passion for fashion and style. From the designers to the numerous volunteers, everyone showed that they carried deeply about fashion and style, and that Ottawa does have what it takes to compete in the global fashion market.

The professionalism and sophistication of this event was a life-changing experience. As the event kicked off, I came down with a nasty cold. I remember doping up on meds throughout the event, I was on a mission to see my designers through and try to put all I have into this event. Overall, the event was an utter success. All the designers were so great, and the result was beyond my expectations

F/HOMME # 1 - May 2011

Recently I haven't been finding any magazines that really intrigue me (other than Homme Essential). However, I happen to find one online that I would probably like to subscribe to in the near future. Its called F/HOMME. I love the images they have in this magazine. Specifically, I like the black and white layout, gives a dramatic look to the overall images. And the images are very editoral... just the way I like it.
Anyway, I just thought I should share this, I'm hoping Chapters will carry this at some point just so I can take a closer look.

Voigtlander Vito CD

I just got back from the camera store and I was so happy to find out that my mom's old voigetlander camera was not broken. Clearly, its no digital camera but I still think it takes beautiful pictures (judging from what my mom showed me). The other bonus is that it doesn't require special film (I was afraid that it wouldn't take the film they have now). Still, the camera guy told me its not as "user-friendly" as the camera's we are used to today. But being the nice guy he is, he gave a crash course in how to adjust it and what settings it should be on depending on the lighting etc. I honestly don't expect to get amazing shots for the first few rounds of film, but I think I'll get the hang of it eventually.

Foxtail Keychains -- new trend or just plain weird?

So I was standing at the bus stop the other day, and as I was people watching I noticed a girl who had a huge keychain with a foxtail-like thing hanging from it...
I saw this before but I was surprised to see it in Ottawa. I then started to think if I liked it or not. At this point, I'm on the fence.
I mean its definitely not a terrible trend, but I don't know if it will catch on.
In thinking about this up and coming trend, I started to look for it online. I was kind of surprised to see how high the price point was on this thing. They range from $50 to $85! Its not even a piece of clothing, its barely an accessory (at least in my opinion).

Anyway, I don't think I'll be jumping on board this trend anytime soon. I don't want to be mistaken for a furry creature (even though I can be scrappy ;) )

Pocket watches....not so pocket these days

So my new favourite obsession is pocket watches. More specifically, I'm obsessed with how its been accessorized these days. I know the classic look involves placing it in a pocket, but why not wear it as a necklace. First, its pretty unisex in its look and second it still looks pretty classy...at least to me it does.
Just recently, I took a gander at one of my favourite vintage stores and they had tons of them for pretty affordable prices. I didn't end up buying one, I just wanted to see what styles they had. Yet the next time I go I'm definitely going to pick one up...I'm brimming with ideas.
